Anton Suhanov is a new name on the contemporary watchmaking scene. An independent watchmaker based in St. Petersburg, Russia, he has worked as chief technical designer at the Konstantin Chaykin manufacture since 2007. In 2016, he won the Young Talents Competition founded by the Académie Horlogère des Créateurs Indépendants and supported by François-Paul Journe (F. P. Journe Invenit et Fecit) presenting Black Clock, the first ever triple-axis tourbillon clock built in Russia. In 2018, he decided to start his career as an independent watchmaker. In 2019, he released the Pharos limited-edition table clock with a three-axis tourbillon, and in 2020 presented the Lotus limited-edition table clock with a three-axis tourbillon and an unusual lotus flower automaton. In 2021, Suhanov introduced his first wristwatch, the Racer Jumping Hour GMT Limited Edition (the present lot). AHCI candidate since 2022.
The Anton Suhanov Racer Jumping Hour GMT Limited Edition would be a good buy for a collector who is getting an attractive and complicated wristwatch from an independent watchmaker, a candidate of the prestigious AHCI Academy.
For the Racer Jumping Hour GMT, his first wristwatch, Sukhanov opted for the style of a 1950s racing car. A display module he developed specifically for this watch, with two retrograde hour and minute hands allowed him to design a dial reminiscent of a car dashboard, with a tachometer on the left and a speedometer on the right. A continuously running three-armed seconds hand adds another sub-dial with an arc-shaped 20-second scale, complemented by date and GMT indications in apertures. The complication module with long curved levers, racks, traditional flat springs, stars and snails looks beautiful. At the beginning of a new hour, the minute hand jumps back to the zero position and this movement advances the retrograde hour hand by one hour together with the 24-hour GMT digital indicator.
To assemble the module, the master uses 172 parts, each of which is finished according to the traditions of high watchmaking, although the module remains hidden under the dial. The finishing is done using traditional techniques. These include hand chamfering and polishing, perlage, engraving, screw polishing, spherical polishing of wheel axles and pins, fine straight grinding and circular brushing, and sandblast matting. The Su100.20 caliber is based on the Eta 2824-2, modified by Anton Suhanov with the decorative full-disc self-winding rotor, reminiscent of the design of a racing car brake disc.
The shape of the Racer Jumping Hour GMT case is based on the principle of the regular Reuleaux polygon, which can be briefly described as a square with rounded sides. Anton Suhanov chose this shape because, in his opinion, it best fits his idea of a dynamic but leisurely perception of time.
The Anton Suhanov Racer Jumping Hour GMT would be a good buy for a collector who is getting an attractive and complicated wristwatch from an independent watchmaker, a candidate of the prestigious AHCI Academy. This wristwatch is an initiation for a master, it's made as a piece unique, and its rarity undoubtedly increases its value as a collector's item. The unusual auto-sporty retro design that matches the double retrograde function of the watch, impeccable technical workmanship and rare caliber with a specially developed complication module give this watch a unique character and high recognition value.
